You are considering a vintage Romanian Contract VZ24 7.92x57mm Bolt-Action Rifle. This is an awesome history piece that’s in extremely good condition. The first orders for VZ24s from Romania occurred sometime in 1938, following the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. By the war’s end, some sources claim Romania had procured 750,000 rifles. All Romanian contract rifles have a two-letter prefix at the start of the serial numbers. The first letter varies, but the second is always an “R,” representing Romania. Our particular example has the Prefix “RR” and was among 75,000 rifles produced with 1940 marked upon the receiver bridge.
The rifle’s woodwork is holding up remarkably well for a battle-worn rifle and only has some minor usage, storage, and handling wear — no major pockmarks or cracks. It has two serial numbers written on the rear of the stock; one serial number is scratched out, while the other is one digit off from the receiver’s serial. The metalwork is excellent and still retains all of its original finish — with very minor high point and rub wear. The barrel measures 23.1 inches in length and includes its original front blade sight and rear adjustable leaf sight — the bore is slightly dark but shiny with strong rifling and no major fouling or pitting concerns — it would twist lead accurately. The action is sound, and everything locks up nice and tight — it has its original buttplate and sling swivel hardware, though the center sling swivel is missing (most likely removed as it hits your cheek if you’re right-handed). Century Arms out of Vermont imported it.
