Hopkins & Allen 5-Shot Safety Police Revolver | 38 Smith & Wesson

You are considering a vintage Hopkins & Allen 5-Shot Safety Police Top-Break Revolver. These were cool pistols and had a unique feature for the time, making them safer than the average revolver. If the hammer never fully cocks backward, or the trigger is never pulled, then the hammer will not strike the frame-mounted firing pin. Good in case your hammer got snagged in your coat pocket. This particular example is in fair condition for its age. The metalwork has a nice brown patina over 2/3rds of it as the finish gradually wears off as you get to the grips, particularly on the left-hand side. The muzzle has a large patch of rust pitting that would need to be cleaned up. The wood grips have a couple of chips and gouges, but no major cracks — they are holding up well. The barrel measures 5-inches in length and is missing its front blade sight but does have its rear v-notch. The bore is bright with strong rifling and some minor fouling — it would shoot well. The top-break functions fine, as does the auto ejectors — however, the timing of the cylinder needs to be buttoned up and is most likely failing due to a weak handspring — as it’ll work about half the time. The hammer locks up and passes a light thumb push test.
