1948 Winchester Model 62A Takedown Rifle in Original Box, .22 S.L. or L.R.

1948 Winchester Model 62A Takedown Rifle in Original Box, .22 S.L. or L.R.

A rare sight to see; A pristine Winchester Model 62A with the original box and publications. The Model 62 was Winchester’s replacement to the Model 1906. A total of 410,000 were produced from 1932 to 1958.

This example comes with the original Winchester box, which shares a matching serial number. Included in the original packaging are the owner’s manual and publications, though the original hang tag is missing.  Manufactured in 1948, this rifle is chambered in .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle. It weighs 5.25 lbs and measures 39.25″ in overall length, with a 23″ round barrel, and 13.25″ length of pull. Overall, the condition is Pristine; the rifle appears to have been purchased, shot between 1 to 3 times, put away in a closet, and endured a couple of house moves. The metalwork is above 95%, showing very little signs of wear. There is a faint fading or discoloration on the sides of the receiver, possibly due to exposure to the salty air near the ocean. The slide action bars show faint signs of use, there are a few random spots in the bluing, about the size of a pen tip, and the barrel and magazine tube show a couple very faint scratches. It features a 17-line, slim-type forearm, straight grip wood stock, and Winchester marked, black checkered hard plastic buttplate. The woodwork is emasculate; it is about as close to 100% as you can get. The top right corner of the wrist is proud by several thousandths. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling.

The box is in Good to VG condition; it has a couple tears, and light warping from partial water damage. It is missing 1/4 of the end label and shows some tearing and curling. All logos, colors, and writing are legible; it is a great example of the overall look and feel of a Winchester rifle box of the era.

It’s always exciting to have the opportunity to examine items like this inside their original packaging, imagining their journey. Consider the great care it must have required to purchase something 75 years ago and maintain it through every move for those 75 years — truly special! Imagine a child opening this on Christmas; it would certainly be a perfect gift for kids who love history and firearms.
